Rear Shock Absorbers Removal/Refitting - Volkswagen Golf IV

Tutorial file: Step-by-step process of disassembly and assembly of the rear shock absorbers of the Volkswagen Golf IV.

 

  1. Lift the vehicle on the lift

2. Disassemble the rear wheel

3. Use hydraulic jack to keep rear spring compressed

4. Unscrew the indicated screws of the top mount

5. Unscrew the indicated screws of the bottom mount

6. Unscrew the mounting nut and disassemble the suspension columns in its components

7. Compare the old shock absorber to the new one to be sure it fits

8. Replace shock absorber and its components with new ones and tighten top mounting nut to 25Nm

9. Fit the shock absorber to the car body by tightening the top mounting nuts to 50Nm + 45º

10. Tighten lower mounting screws to 180Nm

11. Fit rear wheel and tighten to 120Nm

12. Return the car to the ground
